Abstract

This article explores the appraisal in "Liling" short story by Kelly Cherry. As the development of systemic functional linguistics, appraisal is part of interpersonal metafunction, not ideational or textual metafunction and comprises three interacting domains, namely attitude, engagement and graduation.
