Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of interpersonal communication between lecturers and students in enhancing student engagement during online learning at Universitas Putra Indonesia. The shift to digital learning platforms has significantly transformed the dynamics of lecturer-student interaction, demanding new adaptive strategies to sustain meaningful academic relationships. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research involved in-depth interviews with students and lecturers from various faculties. The findings reveal that lecturers who actively apply interpersonal communication principles—such as empathy, responsiveness, clarity of message, and emotional support—tend to foster a higher level of student engagement. The results also indicate that consistent two-way communication, timely feedback, and personalized interaction are pivotal in maintaining student motivation and participation. The study concludes that the success of online learning is not solely dependent on the technology used, but more crucially on the human aspect of communication that supports the learning process. These insights emphasize the importance of interpersonal communication training for lecturers to enhance the effectiveness of remote education delivery.
